Introduction and Principle
A ductless fume hood, also known as a recirculating fume hood, represents a critical apparatus within laboratory settings designed to ensure the safety of personnel by effectively containing and removing hazardous fumes, vapors, or particulate matter generated during experimental procedures. Unlike traditional ducted fume hoods which expel contaminated air directly to the outside environment, ductless fume hoods operate by filtering and recirculating the air within an enclosed workspace, thereby mitigating the need for external ventilation systems. These hoods employ a combination of filtration technologies such as activated carbon, HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, and sometimes other specialty media, to capture and neutralize airborne contaminants before releasing the purified air back into the laboratory environment.
Types of Fume Hoods:
Ducted Fume Hoods: These fume hoods are equipped with ventilation systems that connect to external ductwork, facilitating the direct expulsion of hazardous fumes outside the laboratory building. Ducted fume hoods offer high containment capabilities and are suitable for applications involving extremely toxic or volatile substances.
Ductless (Recirculating) Fume Hoods: Operating without external ducting, ductless fume hoods utilize filtration systems to purify and recirculate air within the hood, effectively removing harmful contaminants. These hoods offer flexibility in laboratory layout and are ideal for environments where ductwork installation is impractical or cost-prohibitive.
Floor Mounted Fume Hoods: Floor mounted fume hoods are installed directly onto the laboratory floor, providing a stable and secure containment solution. These hoods offer versatile configurations and can accommodate large equipment or apparatuses that may not fit within standard bench-mounted fume hoods. Floor mounted fume hoods are particularly suitable for laboratories requiring heavy-duty ventilation and specialized equipment setups.
Special Applications Fume Hoods: Special applications fume hoods encompass a diverse range of specialized containment solutions tailored to specific laboratory requirements. These may include:
Perchloric Acid Fume Hoods: Designed specifically for handling perchloric acid and its derivatives, these fume hoods feature specialized construction materials and exhaust systems to prevent the buildup of explosive perchlorate salts.
Radioisotope Fume Hoods: Engineered to handle radioactive materials safely, radioisotope fume hoods incorporate lead shielding and HEPA filtration to minimize radiation exposure risks.
Acid Digestion Fume Hoods: These hoods are optimized for digesting samples with strong acids, featuring corrosion-resistant materials and enhanced filtration systems to withstand corrosive vapors.
Glove Box Fume Hoods: Glove box fume hoods provide a sealed and controlled environment for handling sensitive or hazardous materials, allowing operators to manipulate samples or equipment within a contained workspace using integrated gloves.
Animal Handling Fume Hoods: Designed for working with laboratory animals or biological specimens, these fume hoods feature specialized airflow patterns and containment features to minimize allergen exposure and maintain animal welfare standards.
